One of the most compelling advantages of the Golden Visa is the streamlined route to Portuguese citizenship. After just five years from the application, investors can apply for a Portuguese passport, granting visa-free travel and unrestricted mobility across the 27 EU nations. According to the Henley Passport Index 2025, Portugal ranks 4th globally, offering visa-free access to 188 destinations, while the Passport Index 2025 places Portugal 3rd, with citizens able to visit 175 countries without a visa.

Unlike other residency programs, Portugal’s Golden Visa does not require full-time relocation. Investors must spend only 7 days in the first year and 14 days every two years thereafter, making it an ideal solution for those with international commitments.

The Golden Visa extends to immediate family members, including spouses, children, parents, and even parents-in-law under one application of €500,000. This means access to Portugal’s world-class healthcare system, top-tier education institutions, and the same privileges as European citizens.

There are multiple ways to qualify for the Golden Visa, allowing investors to choose the option that best suits their financial goals. Diversified investment funds have emerged as the most popular and strategic route for investors seeking access to the Portuguese Golden Visa.
